In my naivete, I've just picked up any old pack of deck screws in the past. They haven't rusted and marked the wood. Apart from that, you can't see them as I drove them well in.

I used these and have not had any problems. I also have a load left sitting in my garage...

£14.99/1300

Depending on whats cheaper when I'm ordering. All deck screws are pretty much the same.

just on cost ?

green coloured external screws have a lot of poor comments here galv, and stainless would be far better .... but you pay.

Your 2nd option seem to suit so that is going to be my choice I think

If you have a lot to do, I'd recommend having a look at

Collated screws with an extension to the driver so that you can work standing up. I've mostly used the system for internal flooring, and it is really quick.

We bought a job lot of the screws a while back, and have a few thousand decking screws spare, so if you were interested in buying them, you'd be welcome to borrow the tool for the duration of the job.

I'd expect to be on me knees most of the time anyway -to set/maintain gaps etc between boards?

I've put in literally thousands of green deck screws from a variety of sources. Never had any problems.

Galv don't look right, SS are mega bucks.

between boards?

If you're using say 12' boards screwed at 400 centres, thats 20 screws per board. 2 screws will hold it in position, so you can put a few boards down with

2 screws, then put the other 18 in standing up. A

But surely as part of a decking system's total costs, the difference isn't that much?

True enough, but why spend money for no apparent benefit? Green treated screws don't go rusty.

Desmond & I do exactly that. Pin the board down with 2 or 3 screws, then go back & fasten the lot in one go.

I did have a Makita autofeed screwdriver that was a complete bloody nightmare - I sent it back in the end.

How does this strongtie gadget work?

It's an attachment that goes on various drywall screwdrivers. I use it with a Makita 6824 driver. The collated screw system is a little different from the normal, in that th ey are joined by a strip part way down the shaft rather than at the head, a nd the tool holds the strip by a combination of the screw heads and the pla stic strip. That makes everything a lot more stable, and more reliable. The screws use a square drive bit, which grips really well, and releases prope rly when they are driven in. Works just as well as an attachment directly o n the driver, and with the extension on for use standing up.

Thanks, I'll have to investigate.

If it is of interest my final choice was SPAX Wirox washer head screws anti-corrosion finish - 15 yr warranty

For fixing decking went with SPAX reverse thread screws, pull boards together:

Both have Torx heads, and drive in easier than any other screw I have used - SPAX is not cheap, but great product.
