It did say it was automatic but I am beginning to suspect that these were two incidents controlled by different bits of the network and apparently unaware of each other till it became clear at which point staff intervened but as they already had some other damage, or so the guy said, it was not trivial to reconnect everyone as quickly as had been hoped. These spokes persons tend to dance around the actual facts though and spin the thing their own way. Brian

Yes our own government were entirely responsible for pushing rapidly into unstable and unreliable renewables at a rate that the network struggles to cope with, thus requiring massive conventional backup on standby at great cost.

Renewables are a good idea, but only when we have storage to stabilise it. It may actually make more sense as more electric cars are in use, as they could take the power when there is an excess and feed it back during a shortage.

Renewales are a bad idea because they are expensibe, environmentally destructive and unable to function without some sort of expsneive backup and they increase grid instability and transmission costs.

There is nothing a wind farm can do that a CCGT or nuclear power station cannot do better.,

That last has similarites to the USB sockets found our Park & Ride buses. Presumably, if the battery runs flat, passengers all have to plug in their phones to get the bus going .

Just how are you going to do that? Drivers are already not buying electric cars because of range anxiety so the prospect of them waking up to discover the grid has drain a large percentage of their battery isn't going to wash.

Also lithium cells have a limited number of cycles before they fail so your car isn't going to last as long before you need a new battery. Its worse in that partial cycles will reduce the capacity of the battery and the range before it fails adding to the range anxiety.

Its going to take a lot before any driver will commit to that so in reality its a none starter put forwards by greens that can't think.

That's not how it would work. Any vehicles that are plugged in and and above a certain level of charge could feed back into the grid for a very short period, but only when there is a sudden change that is so great that it threatens to shut down sections of the grid, just to cover the time needed for slower systems to spool up or start up. The cars would then go on charging. The effect on their charge would be negligible and it is clearly not something that happens frequently or we'd be having blackouts all the time, so battery life would be unaffected.

As a last resort to stop sections of the grid failing, on a very infrequent basis, I would certainly have no problem with it.

If we stay with the renewable energy plan blackouts will be a daily occurrence.

Even if they only drain 1% its going to affect the batteries if it happens very often. It will of course happen more often the more windymills we have.

With variable wind what makes you think it would be infrequent? we already keep stuff on hot standby to cope with the variables.

The storage would be to make windy power easier to use and allow the spinning stuff to be shut down to save the planet.

If its not going to do that then why bother?

We don't actually know why the grid failed yet so saying a few thousands of car batteries would have stopped it is a dream.

We can?t even make a laptop battery with a decent life and capacity let alone one suitable for storing energy on the scale required to support the grid.

The tree huggers convinced the government to abandon development of better nuclear reactors etc in the late 70s/early 80s, arguing we had coal etc for

300 years. Then they turned their attention to killing of the burning of fossil fuels.

Their won?t be happy until we are back in the Stone Age.
