Weeds poking through newly tarmaced back yard

The hot weather of the last few days has softened slightly the recently laid tarmac surface and there are now 3 new bumpd where weeds are sprouting up.

I have called in the contractor, who will take a look but short of fighting him to get it relaid at his expense, what else can be done. Will weed killer chemical work, if so which one?

if the job were done even vaguely competently its hard to see how this could happen. Sounds more like someones just raked a layer of tarmac over soil - with predictable results.

Indeed so. If he prevaricates, ask him to take a sample with a core drill to show what he actually laid, as compared with what was expected.

if its as bad as it sounds I cant see the OP getting anywhere with the contractor. It isnt illegal to put tarmac on soil, so I see little comeback unless payment was made by credit card - and most cowboys dont accept those. If you know their name/address you could pursue it through the small claims process on the grounds that its not fit for the job, but from the contractor you're only going to get flannel.

Might want to try uk.legal.moderated

Was it laid by an Pikey bloke who happened to have some tarmac left over from a job around the corner? Did he offer a good price if you paid cash?

:-)

When they built the Wainscott by pass they must have had tons of tarmac left over, judging by the amount of cheap deals for cash that were going around.

Definitely sounds like a cowboy job. You could try using a Glyphosate based weed killer which will kill the weeds right back to the roots. But frankly I'd be pushing to have the job done properly and the tarmac relaid. Weeds should NEVER come up when tarmac is laid properly. They should have properly prepared the bed for the tarmac including putting down strong week killer. Sounds like the sort of job done by door-knocking pikeys with some "spare tarmac" or a bodgit and run contractor.

Blimey. How recently are we talking?

As regularly featured on "Rogue Traders" etc. Your local Trading Standards might like to know, but are unlikely to get your money back. Around here, they have a "rapid response" team to target the pikeys.

It was actually laid by a well known local contractor who has/had a good reputation, so it'll be interesting to see what he says when I show him. Just goes to shows what a devil of a job it is to get stuff done right these days.
