There are plenty of people on Usenet who have earned the original - accept no substitutes - full fat Senility.

I don't know why you would think that. I know there have been campaigns of disinformation in recent years - the Right Wing of course will trash any institution if it suits them - to discredit the authority of the Met Office because they obviously support the overwhelming scientific consensus over Global Warming.

I wouldn't surprise me in the least if they rely more on satellites and offshore and automated data collection , less on local weather stations.

Probably because the conditions are in a chaotic state. So just as when we flip a coin, we know it will be heads or tails, but not which, the weather can be in a similar state. At such times every one produces a forcast but does not say what the probability it will be right will be..

Well there are very few in East Anglia and I know that most, if not all, ship based weather stations no longer exist.

I don't know if we have any specific UK data on this, but p2 of Hansen et al 1999* gives graphs of met stations over the last century or so showing the very sharp decline in the number of stations towards the end of the 20th century.

Indeed, and many of those are now surrounded by urban development.

Curiously weather stations that still have their old kit in use for decades and are miles away from civilisation don't show any upward trends at all..

I know. Those climate alarmists who deny the reality of the earths climatic record are beyond hope really.

As are the people who deny the existence of hardwired biological gender.

As for the conspiracy theorists who see 'fascists' and ' hard right movements' everywhere, I shake my head.

There is Fascism everywhere these days, under the euphemism of 'lobbying'. But most people who use the word are following 1960s students' usage, and they didn't know what it meant, either. Mussolini and Mosley offered definitions, but few seem to have read them.

As to 'hard right' and 'far right', they are used now to describe anyone to the political right of Chairman Mao.

A ship would give the mainly data available at sea level and the aircraft would give data available at 32,000 feet and often for a limited area as they use the jet steam to save on fuel costs.

Irrespective of how much data is collected it comes down to interpretation for predicting forward weather. Unfortunately so many weather apps on mobile phones and on short summaries on TV channels give conflicting information which is often incorrect on the day.

The problem is that weather forecasting is incapable of any precision due to paucity of data and simplicity of the models.

That doesn't stop people expecting it or claiming that they really do know the future.

... not to mention (ensembles of) large and computationally intensive simulations.

The Met Office were certainly using weather buoys with satellite links in 1978 when I visited the Bracknell site and was shown one on the bench. There were others at sea sending back data. John
