VERY TOT reinventing the wheel

For Xmas I got a gift pack of beer, in bottles.

It came with a bottle opener. The opener consisted of a flat wood disk that fitted in the palm of the hand and on the underside a piece of flat metal with a clover shaped hole.

The beer was quite nice but the bottle opener was a complete piece of s**t. It was well made but completely useless for removing the tops from beer bottles. After attempting to open the first bottle it went straight into the bin.

Why did someone bother to attempt to redesign something for which there were already basic and _good_ designs in existence ?

One excellent design is a Rittal panel key!

You could make your own .

When you said 100 years old, my brain thought 1870s or such. I'm finding it a little difficult to think 1923 is 100 years ago. But I still feel like a teenager and it's the 70s !

So here's something weird. Go and watch some music on Youtube say from TOTP (if you can find something without a sex-offender presenter!) from the end of the 60s, 1968, 1969 in BW upconverted from 405 lines and probably recorded with an image orthicon. Then watch the same artists from say 1970/71 recorded on 625 lines and colour. To me the BW video feels like it's massively older than the colour one even though it's only a year or two. Or the colour image doesn't feel old, it could have been just a few years back. It's probably something to do with halo effect and upconverting. Or something deep and psychological in me yearning to be less old than I am.

Presumably that's why it was included, the grog seller is handing them out for free because no one is silly enough to want one.

Interesting question but I couldn't manage to come up with any answer even after thinking about it yesterday.

better because it does what we call twist tops as well. Harder to make yourself.

I have been trying to think of how best to get china to make them in volume.

Well, nobody did the research, or maybe they cost too much. A set of mole grips can open bottles. Brian

Proper men don't need a bottle opener. They just use their teeth.

After not being able to find a NHS dentist to do the work and paying many thousands to fix some ongoing problem I'm not going to risk my teeth on a beer bottle cap costing 1p to open it :)

I have seen that done, actually. By some of the big guys in the Geneva Cricket Club. But that was 50 years ago. Whether they still have teeth I know not.

You should get one of these:

Or some fool had a massive brain fart.

But cost a lot more than a simple bottle opener from china.

That's why I said "proper men".

there are always fools lining up to buy something that looks different ('cool'). It doesn't need to work to sell. The gadget designer likely didn't care if it worked.
