You could probably bypass some of the expense and inefficiency losses by fitting a secondary 12v heater set to slightly lower temp than the main heater. It will thus kick in automatically, with no switching, and be 100% efficient. Going through an invertor would add cost and power loss. Only worth it if you can fit a 12v heater at low cost. Would have the advantage that it also insures against primary heater failure.
