The heating in this house is quite old - gravity fed with a "Cavalier" boiler and ?in dia steel tube (?in BSP?). There's no room stat so, for control, we have the clock and the boiler stat only, and fine control is a matter of tweaking the rad valves (this leads to disagreements between me and Mrs Nog but that's another story ;-). I would like to improve this by fitting TRVs to all the radiators but can't figure how I would do this without radical cut-back and replacement (with copper) of the last foot, or so, of the steel tube to each radiator, from the last steel elbow beneath the floor. I know that I would need to use brass to interfit the copper but would this be satisfactory in a heating system, or would it introduce a serious corrosion scenario?

Cant you add a programmable room stat without too much hassle? a couple of wires and a small box screwed to the wall is very little hassle.
TRVs for use with steel screwed pipe are available. Ask at a good suppliers such as Plumb Centre
I really want to head off Mrs Nog's propensity for whacking the radiators up to full bore when "it's a bit cold in here". Minutes later, it's subtropical, the radiators get turned down and, whaddaya know, "it's a bit cold in here".
