Getting closer to the time to do this job, and I am still pondering the options. With such substantial battens, how do you design the outer frame?

Some time ago we were discussing trellis, and the choice to make or buy, since tanalised battens are quite cheap.
A square pattern is no problem, but with a diamond it looks like it may be more tricky to sort the overall framing. Since the batten timber is 19 x 32, the method used on thinner material, of sandwiching them between the framing members, looks like it would be far too chunky. Alternatively, cutting back the diagonals in one direction might work, but I fear that would weaken it significantly.
