It would be connected to mains cold and hot from a combi. And it would need to attach to the bath rather than the wall.
Do they work well? I can imagine some issues with the way the boiler might cycle on/off...
Any brands/models to avoid or are recommended?

A bit depends on what you are trying to achieve. Traditional thermostatic mixers can have difficulty (i.e. fluctuating temperatures, or slow responses) with combi feeds due to the interplay that flow rates on the hot and cold have on temperature.
e.g. if the temp is too high, it throttles the supply of hot water. The reduction in flow rate can result in an increase in temperature of the supply if previously it was being limited by the maximum power output of the boiler.
Hence why some showers designed for operation on a combi are pressure balanced rather than controlled with a TMV.
One common approach with bath taps is to place a basic thermostatic blending valve in just the hot feed. Its main purpose simply being to limit the maximum temperature.
