Thermostat problem/Heating coming on at irregular times

Although the thermostat is set high (30 degrees) the heating only seems to turn on at irregulat times, and therefore never reaches the temperature on the thermostat. The water boiler is working fine (and has a separate thermostat) so there's always hot water.

Any suggestions? Could there be a second thermostat somewhere? Is there usually a way of manually turning on the pump for the heating?

How long is a piece of string?

You'll need to tell us far more detail about your system design before anyone can make any sensible suggestions.

What type of boiler? Is it fully pumped? What zone valves are fitted? What is the programmer set to do? Is the room stat programmable? Etc. Better still if you can post a reference to some photos of the boiler and pump/zone valve installations. Have a look at the various heating 'plans' in

and see whether you recognise your system.

Has it ever worked properly? If so, did it suddenly change without anyone doing any maintenance or altering any controls? Do the radiators *only* get hot when the domestic hot water is being heated?

Answer these questions, and someone should be able to help you!

If you have an old fashioned thermostat you should be able to determine at what temperature it ceases to call for heat by rotating the dial and listening to the contacts clicking in and out. If it is calling for heat and the boiler hasn't been firing recently then there is something else between it and the boiler or a fault at the boiler itself.

That something else is usually a programmer with separate channels for hot water and central heating unless the boiler is a combi in which case there may not be a second channel.

So first find your programmer. It will probably be adjacent to the boiler itself unless you have a programmable thermostat in which case that should tell you directly whether it is calling for heat.

Incidentally you don't want your house heated to 30C. 22C is as about as much as any should require and 30 might not be attainable in winter with a properly designed system. (I run mine at 9C for peak periods and it struggles when it is 10 below outside).

No, I am not that hardy. :-)

Peak temperature should have been 19C.
