Talking of (leccy) meters ...

The thread about smart meters made me wonder ... aren't meters supposed to be changed (and checked) every 10 years ?

We've lived here 11, and had a *gas* meter changed, but not the electric ... should I nudge them ?

Similarly, my gas meter had been changed once in 20 years before the smart meter was fitted, but the leccy meter had been unchanged in that time.

My electricity meter was changed at 25 years. They wanted to change the gas meter at a similar age, but failed to turn up twice, and I'm not making any more appointments for them, so it was never done.

Back in 1990 when I was working on a remote meter reading project, the electricity boards bought their meters with a 10 year guarantee, and a 40 year expected life.

No change of meters here in over 20 years. The gas meter was relocated due to some 'safety' work. As our bills are reasonable for the size of household I don't want new meters in case our current ones are underreading ;-)

I asked a reader about this and he told me unless readings go well out of expected ranges nobody bothers these days. Now whether this is really the truth or just how he perceives his world I'd not like to say!

I think leccy & gas meters are supposed to be changed @ 20yrs. Why bother nudging the supplier(s)? Nick.

It depends on the meter; it will be type approved to remain in calibration for a certain period. Probably electronic meters are more stable than mechanical.

I've had 2 gas meters changed, but never an electric meter for out-of-calibration.

If the meter in question is *Made in England* it will never need re-calibrating and will last for ever. Fact.

Even if we use French electric?

French electrons in English meters? What a disgusting concept.
