Synchronous motor for microwave

The motor on my microwave ( Swan digital 900w 25L) is going wrong. It wont turn the turntable properly and makes a cluncking sound.

I would like to replace the motor . I love the microwave and its in good nick! Swan dont make it anymore apparently.

OH opened the bottom and we had the numbers off it Synchronous motor SM-2301 F, 220/240AC , 5/6r/min , 4w, CL:155 (RoHS). Then the name SHUNDI XINBAO YH. There is also a date almost hidden below "Synchronous Motor 2019/01/18 ( I think its a date)

I have tried searching for a swan synchronous motor and also for the number SM-2301 F to no avail. E spares say they cant get me a Swan one as Swan dont sell the part.

However, on Ebay I have seen a couple of synchronous motors for microwaves with different numbers but the same 5/6r/min 4w and 220/240 AC.

Is there something special about getting an SM 2301 F ? Will any of the others I have seen do the job? Is there some key here as to what motor fits or do I have to give up on my beloved microwave?

If anyone can help me find a motor that will work I would be grateful.

Sounds like the platter isn?t centred on the motor hub rather than the motor. I would double check this before looking for a new motor. It?s exactly what our Panasonic does if I don?t replace the platter carefully.

They're almost universal, and can be swapped from underneath the microwave without going anywhere near the dangerous bits.

Since they're synchronous motors they run at different rpm on UK/EU 50Hz vs USA

60Hz mains, in practice as long as you get a 230V one it'll work, maybe the turntable will be a bit slower or faster.

It can be the motor, or it can be a worn-out plastic bit that sits on top of the motor.

The clunking is the plastic bit.

If you put the platter back, and the platter is not seated, it clunks.

But if the plastic is worn, and the glass platter is lowered properly onto it, you can still get the clunking sound, until the plastic bit is replaced.

The motor itself is gutless, and it relies on the reduction gearing inside the housing, to convert rotational speed (reduction) into increased torque (so it can move the heavy platter at a very low RPM rate).

In ideal circumstances, you'd buy both a motor and a plastic spindle, which prepares you to replace either one or both.

I checked this. The turntable plate is seated properly. Its the peg in the middle that goes round slowly, one clunk at a time. I looked it up and it said it was the motor.

I was wondering if they might be universal. My OH looked at an e spares DIY fitting a motor in a microwave. He then opened it up and we got the number.

In fairness to Swan my microwave was still in warranty ( it has a two year warranty) and I called them expecting they would send someone to repair it as it is so new but they just said they would replace it. Trouble is they dont make the digital 900w 25L anymore and I had an 800w 20L replacement as thats all they do now in digital( you can still get my microwave from AO or Curry's though).

The replacement is OK. I am not ungrateful or anything but my old one had capacity and was faster . It was the right colour too. I loved it. Swan left me with the old one and told me to dispose of it. Its £40 in my area to take a microwave to the tip. It seems a shame to dump a microwave that looks new and hasnt a mark on it. Anyway, after a few days I decided I really preferred my old microwave and asked OH if he might repair it instead of me using the new one.

So, we need a motor and a peg?

Fair chance then that the plastic gears are partly stripped. I put a large item in mine and didn't centre it propely. It stopped the turntable before I noticed and started clunking. Still goes but is iffy on the drive and it clunks. The lugs in the cavity are OK.

Bought a new Samsung. FH, cheap crap! My old one was cheapest available 25 years erlier and I could hve used it as a step. The Sammy is flimsy as hell and the roller circle had all 3 wheels stuck! Couldn't free 'em so used the old one that barely fits.

maybe he can nick the new motor and swap it onto the old microwave?

I don't suppose the one from the new one will fit the old one?

Hope it works for you, I have had generally good results from ebay. The odd 'doesnt work' ot 'broken in transit' but mostly OK.

OK, it's obvious why it does not work.
