surface mounted electrical sockets

I'm putting in a load of chrome sockets, light switches, etc in my house, most are going to be flush fitted, but there are some that I can't flush fit so they'll have to be surface mounted. I'm looking for some good quality surface mounted metal clad boxes, but I can only seem to find boxes that includes sockets, I only want the boxes, any ideas?

You will be very unlikely to get chromed surface boxes. Metalclad sockets come with boxes because the box and socket outlines have to match and they are manufacturer-specific. However the standard boxes supplied have knockouts for conduit entry, and in schools and other locations where there is a risk of vandalism these are not allowed, and at least one manufacturer supplies separate boxes that do not have any conduit knockouts. These would be intended for use with that manufacturer's sockets and would have to be drilled and grommetted for entry. They are listed as 23-1596 at 1.70 for single and 23-1598 at 2.25 for double, on page 255 of Rapid Electronics catalogue and are for use with Click metalclad accessories.

Have you tried an electrical factors ? IIRC people like MK listed the backing boxes from their metal surface mounted range as items in their own right - but this was a few years ago and the MK range has been totally revised since then.

Surface mount metal clad sockets are of a different design to flush ones - they have 'rounded off' corners, and are slightly smaller. So are usually sold as a box and socket combination. If you wish to surface mount flush sockets to match others, I think your only option is a plastic box. You can get 'adaptable' boxes of 75 x 150mm, but I don't think they're an exact fit and in any case don't have the mounting lugs.

You might find one of the specialist accessory makers like Walsall Conduits do surface mounted chrome finish accessories, but these are likely to be order only from a wholesaler and much more expensive than the more popular ranges.
