Spreadsheet type data manipulation?

Hi all,

I've recently bought one of the Lascar USB data capture units (EL-USB-3 Volts):

.. and just used it to monitor the discharge of a 26Ah gel battery into a ~7A (incandescent lamp) load (down to 11V).

The output from the logger is a CSV .txt file and their simple viewer autoscales the Y axis (Volts / 15) and just shows the X in real time (presumably taken from the PC start time and the reading intervals?), however I'd like to display and annotate a graph with shifted Y axis (say 10-15V) and the X in minutes (or hrs / min but starting from zero).

I'm sure this would be something pretty easy to do with a spreadsheet or maybe there are graphing apps that would take this data and allow the sort of manipulation mentioned above without having to deal with formula etc?

As we are all of BB now and bandwidth isn't a problem, I'll insert one such log here for anyone so inclined to play ... ;-)

(You can discard the low alarm column, just playing with that and I can trim the leading and trailing 0V readings in Notepad+. If you do that though you lose the initial column / time counts and would need to adjust for each graph manually?).

That's what I thought one could use (but no idea how) but had you trimmed any leading 0V's I'm guessing you would have to subtract the value of that time (say 6 x 10s intervals) from the start of the new X axis scale (for the axis 'Total_Elapsed_Time' to be pertinent?

For a standard load across a range of batteries, the elapsed time down to a specific voltage (depending on the type of LA battery being tested) is what I use to give me a quick 'usefulness' guide.

Similar with the trailing 0V's *and*, where the voltage lifts when the load auto-disconnects (but the logger is still connected and running). Whilst I can work out the actual elapsed time, it would be nice if the graph itself reflected that (and I don't really actually need the sub times come to think of it, as long as the final time is shown in hrs / mins or just mins)? I notice on your X the mins just repeat ever hour?

Another thing that your graph has shown up is the (lowish) resolution of the logger, compared with my fancy charger / logger in any case. Now with the current 10s logging interval it tells me I have over 3 days worth of logging , so that could be faster if it really mattered (and it doesn't as such, other than seeing a slightly smoother line). ;-)

It would make a difference on the Optimate charge graph as you can see the various charge / test phases in better detail.

So, seeing your formula for just that bit, it's obvious to me that I'd probably need a more basic graphing app, even if I have to bit of manual pruning beforehand (in Notepad+ or OO Calc)?

After I've cycled / logged these 2 batteries I might put one on daughters rabbit hutch electric fence and solar panel so I can get some idea just how well the solar panel(s) might be able to balance the energiser (or not), especially with the winter coming up.

I think that has convinced me that with that sort of graph, the interim times aren't really relevant so maybe only the who hours and final time would be sufficient?

It would be different for the charge plot as it might be interesting to see when transitioned between the various phases (bulk - test etc) but that is of less use in general to seeing how a battery fares under load.

This should be an ongoing thing so I'd ideally need a solution I could manage. [1]

[1] FWIW etc. The charger / logger only logs when you press the start button (and apply the charge / load) and stops looking at the end of the process. You can also apply the scaling to the live display so that it's pretty well ready to use at the end. It's just that it's not always convenient to connect that unit up and a PC to do the logging ....

p.s. This USB logger would also be handy for long term monitoring of say a car battery. With a 60 second sample time you can cover 22 days. ;-)

Presumably they can be taken out or adjusted. This is the first time I've u sed LibreOffice Calc and graphs, so I'm not used to playing about with it - just used the chart wizard. No other software was used and no other data m aipulation carried out. Just formatted the time column to 'Time' and the ax is value to HH:MM:SS (on the second try!)

Once you've set up the spreadsheet chart to use cell ranges, axis resolutio ns etc you'd just paste in the comma delimited stuff into the sheet and the chart will update to the new values.

Yes you can use excel to parse the data and then graph it however you want and although I've not done it for years,get a macro to do the whole thing for you - but might involve some visual basic as well. But The easy log graph software allows you to draw a box round the graphical data points of interest and re plot them thus giving scope for zooming in and drawing a suppressed zero y axis (and X axis for that matter). Not sure if you can save that within easy log or maybe just take screen shots when you hare happy with the format?

Might be a lot easier if you are not a spreadsheet wizard.
