my efforts to patch render leave a lot to be desired,i have got it on ok but now i need to smooth bits of it and blend the edges in better before i sandtex it.what is the best tool to use,i have an angle grinder so should i get an attachment for it that will do the job,as always thanks for your advice

I used a wire brush when softish, to get the worst of the lumps off, then a float.
Steel float is quick & easy, don't worry about the edge lines it leaves. Then a wet paintbrush will get rid of those.
Once its set, forget it, it'll be 100x harder.
