As part of the new patio I am building a new wall 450mm high from ground le vel (plus 2 courses below ground, since I have dug out 150mm over the whole area anyway for 75mm MOT and 75mm slab + mortar). Foundations will be 150m m strip at a depth of 300mm. The wall runs along the front of a row of ivy and was previously single skin built on top of the old patio. The wall is a bout 6 metres long with a 45 degree turn for 600mm at one end and a 90 degr ee turn for 600mm at the other end.
At this height, double skin is just about recommended, but I don't really h ave space for a full double skin wall which would narrow down the path too much. I will be using marshalite reconstituted stone walling or similar. These bl ocks are only finished on one long side (you can apparently "dress" the end s on site), so not really suited to use of headers.
Would it be OK to have pillars about every 1.5m (between the main ivy stems ) and the rest single skin ? Also due to the lack of headers, would it be a cceptable to just tie in the back half of the pillar with stainless steel t ies rather than building it in - I realise the back of the pillar would rea lly only be a stack of bricks !
Or any other ideas not using headers ?
Simon.
