Knots? Nautical miles per hour .... yes! Still useful for converting into degrees of latitude and longitude. Fathoms? Depth (or soundings to use the jargon)... No! Charts have been metricicated with the Hydrological Survey measuring in metres for yonks ... ( that's a milli Aeon for the metricated).

But, the nanosecond is the time it takes for light to travel one _Foot_! Now if that isn't proof that God is English and spends eternity completing the Times crossword whilst watching cricket, what is?

Now, do you mean metricated or metricicated, or even metrificated as Humphrys insists?

My godfather explained to me that a millium was somewhere between umpteen and something I've forgotten. It was as long time ago, more than yonks.

It troubles me a little that your response has the certainty of practical experience about it. Still, nothing ventured... :-)

You must have small hands. Mine aren't large, and the narrowest part of my narrowest digit is 16mm or 5/8" wide.

My thumb is near enough an inch.

That's funny. I thought the inch was now defined as exactly 25.4mm.
