Resin to glue wooden gatepost to concrete one

I've been asked to replace a wooden gatepost (95mm) that is placed directly next to a concrete post.

The wooden post supports quite a heavy wooden gate and has broken at the bottom where it rotted.

I'm planning to dig out the rotten wooden "root" of the post and put another one in but use the concrete post to strengthen it by putting some metal plates on.

It occurred to me to wonder whether the kind of resin used for resin fixings would be any good as an adhesive in this situation - perhaps inspired by the way silicon sealant can act as a very effective adhesive when used on a shower screen!

According to the TV advert Gorilla Glue is perfect for that.

I would bolt or strap the remainder of the original wooden post ( with the gate hanging fixtures already in place) to the concrete post as long as its in good condition.

This is exactly where I drag out my monster tub of car body filler I use it for repairing all rotten wood, and all bondong of metal to wood where weight and appearance is not a huge issue.

Dont bother with any metal plates

Utterly useless for providing bending strength which a post supporting a gate will need.

The normal way is to bolt them together, I 'd not try the glue, since Concrete is not strong in tension, so even if the adhesive worked, the surface of the concrete over time will crack and come away I suspect. I think a couple of metal straps around the concrete and screwed to the wood would work if the concrete has no holes for bolts. Brian

Hmm, well, how old is the concrete post and how level. also your new wood is bound to swell or twist over time, I just think it is a very short term solution to glue it. Brian
