As you both have observed, tell them you've got one and life becomes complicated, and more than likely expensive, with having to follow their requirements to maintain cover. Annually maintained, set every time you leave the house as an absolute minimum.
We've never told them we have one and the neighbours around here (well, most of them!) look after each other.
