Removing ceiling tile adhesive.

I have removed polystyrene tiles (of all places) in the kitchen and am left with dabs of black adhesive, as hard as rock. Any ways of removing it, what will soften it, any ideas please? TIA

One of those super-sharp scrapers with the foot-long handle will move it. Buy spare blades because they don't stay super-sharp very long.
