Remote switching a wall fan?

Hi All,

Our daughter has a desk / wall mounted fan on the wall in her room and on the really hot nights she generally switches it on before climbing up to her high wall mounted bed.

I dare say there are times during the night when things cool down that she may prefer the fan off but can't be bothered to climb out and turn it off so I thought I'd investigate some of this X10 stuff?

Having said that I'm not sure I need to go X10 (if that suggests a broader remote control system?) but whatever we get needs to be able to cope with a fan as a load rather than a simple light bulb etc.

Another feature on the wish list might be a delayed 'off' (like a communal lobby light switch) but still with remote on / off override)?

I had thought of rigging a series of string controlled 'fingers' that actually accurate the buttons on the fan (Off / 1 / 2) that terminate over her bed .. ;-)

All the best ..

If the fan plugs into a 13amp socket, then you can buy quite cheaply a remote control socket operated by radio. I have a set of three of these plug in units operated by a single remote control with three buttons. The range is perhaps 30yds and I use it for turning the router on/off remotely, garden lighting and some display lights in the summer-house all from my armchair. Cost was about £10 from Netto/Lidle/Aldi.

Spend £29 and get a draper wall mounted fan with full remote control. Brilliant thing, with full programme of control routines.

Hi Harry and thanks for that.

I wonder what sort of energy they consume when the appliance is in it's off state?

I was thinking they might be a good way to save some energy as well as allow you to switch stuff without having to get to the wall socket etc?

That looks ideal ;-)

I'll see if my local car spares shop could get one in for me (where did you get yours from please)?

Oh and it is silent in operation, no rumble.

Why not just wire a switch for it next to the bed ?

Well I could .. except the bed is very 'raised' and getting cables up and within reach isn't 'easy'?

Plus I like the idea of the full function remote control now ;-)

And we can easily find a use for her existing fan .. ;-)

Tim I'm sure if you use google or check CPC, RS, Maplins there is a mains timer switch that will allow you to turn teh fan on and off on a timer and also one that allows you to use a remote to do the same.

A search on Google [draper wall mounted remote controlled fan] finds quite a few references including the following: -

A bamboo stick is the most versatile remote control. It does lighting, heating, fans, some curtains, and fetches some onjects. Another option is a flex from the fan with a round swtich on the end, which can be left on the bed, or hanging on the edge etc. As used in old hospitals.

given the chance (saves all that "well you have taken my money where are the goods" .. or "yes it's here but it's broken / the wrong one / second hand ... " stuff) ;-)

Yeah, I also found that but do like the 'fully' remote fan. Also removes the issues of 'is it suitable for inductive loads' type questions ..?

I may go for something like that to 'kill' all my HiFi / STB's when we aren't using / watching them .. etc .. in the summer at least!

We have something equally technical to call our daughter from her room for dinner etc .. a short pole with a rubber 'foot' on the end we can 'boomp' on the ceiling! Works every time no matter how loud her music ;-)

I'm not sure I want her stabbing at the fan with a stick half asleep though ;-)

I had thought of that .. and / or 'remoting' the interlocking two speed switch from the to a suitable enclosure .... the remote controlled fan would be quicker though!

All the best ..
