It's called pumping over, and is a bad thing since it introduces air into the system causing corrosion.

Try reducing the pump speed. If the upper rads don't get hot after this, the system probably needs balancing. See FAQ.

Thanks to all who replied, I'll slow down the pump and bite the bullet and get the whole lot sorted, I'm guessing that the pumping over is probably made worse by having the upstairs rads all turned off ?
