Puzzled by telephone not working

I had to temporarily move my master socket, it worked fine. Now I have moved it back the telephone is dead. I am puzzled as the internet is fine. I have tried a different telephone, that is the same. any suggestions please?

Poor connection - DSL will often jump a gap in the circuit which stops the phone working.

Go back and repunch all the IDC connections.

Have you stuck a DMM on DC volts across the incoming line (2 and 5 of any box) and you should see 50V or so?

No volts, no line current no dialtone (but the line could tinkle the phone when rung).

I can confirm what others here have said about re-checking connections. I moved my master socket, connected via an old-style grey junction box outside with screw terminals. With one of the screw terminals floating (poor access, poor light, behind a bush) the broadband still worked but the phone was dead.

Damaged one of the wires or its not making contact. There are more wires in a master than in the rest of the circuit. Trouble is, if you call any of the companies out they will charge you about

100 notes to fix it as its your fault. Brian

Also if you took it off the wall and the cable was secured with small staples when you bend old wire to get it out of your way, often aging cable does just break inside thecable. It seems to go brittle at the point its cleated to the wall. I had this a while back and the guy had to fit a whole new cable from his outside box to the master socket to fix it. No obvious siign of damage except one of the conductors was open circuit. Brian
