Plumbing problem - need urgent help

I'll admit to being a bit of a plumbing novice.

My central heating system has a gate valve which I use to turn the water supply to the radiators on & off. I thought that if I turned it off then I could drain the CH system and replace two radiators.

I drained the system down & removed the radiators.

However, when the missus switched the hot water on for a shower, hot water started coming out of the pipes which feed the radiators.

As I said, I'm not a novice but I'm sure this can't be right.

I want to leave the radiators off for a couple of weeks as I want to plaster behind them and fit new rads. I won't be able to do this if I get hot water shooting out the pipes everytime the hot water comes on.

Can I simply put compression stop ends on the open pipes where I've taken the rads off?

Any help at the moment would be greatly appreciated.
