Plastering costs

Hello,

Is there a rough and ready figure for how much it would cost to skim a wall, i.e. x pounds per square metre?

I had a go once but did a terrible job, so we had a "handy man" come and do it properly. Even so, there were still a few rough patches that had to be polyfillered after. Was he out of practice or do even the pros leave a finish that needs touching-up after?

Are there any web sites to help give me tips on how to DIY?

Thanks.

I used to work with a little team with a few of us all in different trades, in amongst the crowd were a shit hot plasterer and his brother, a top rate decorator. After I'd chased out a few walls the plasterer plastered up the chases, and a fine job he made too. The decorator the filled and sanded over all the chasing and plastering in preperation for applying lining paper.

So to summarise, shit hot plasterer, still not good enough for some. ;)

Not sure if this is going to be any help but our bathroom, 6' x 6' was £250 for all four walls and ceiling (3 years ago, in Surrey). No idea if this was a good/bad/average price but he left the room with a mirror smooth finish which didn't need any touching up and cleared up after himself as well.

It's usually charged by the day, at something around £200-£250, but probably varies well outside this in some areas of the country. A plasterer can skim a small to medium sized room in a day, but if you've only got a smaller amount to do, you'll likely be charged for a day anyway as plasterer is unlikely to be able to do another job the same day to make up.

A number of us have described it in some detail in this newsgroup. Search back for articles on google.

That sounds bout right from my experience. The chap I used for the old house charged about IIRC 300 quid for a room - size isn't so important, Whilst *very* occasionally I might find a little bit that was a bit 'off' overall the finish was very good and didn't need any fiddling with.

Problem with having a single wall done is that it will be relatively expensive, if you can get someone to do it, as it such a small job

Would it be fair to say that the ceiling costs as much as the walls, i.e. half the cost was for the walls and half was for the ceiling?

I saw in Sarah Beanys book that where a job was less than half a day find more work to fill their time if you're paying for it. (I peeked in the bookshop cos its a bit dear)
