Plasterboard

I have just spent some hot hours replacing hall ceiling with new plasterboard, having been told to have the lighter coloured side facing down. I now read that this is not correct for plastering onto, the question is if I try to plaster onto this side. Will the plaster just fall to the floor, and if so, will this be because I'm not a a plasterer or because you can't plaster the light side. Oh well, I hear some red wine calling.

The book dates from the times before fibreglass tape. You needed a place to put a layer of plaster and hemp across the joints without it showing after the rest of it was plastered. These days with adhesive fibreglass there is no need for the recesses. They would just hamper the job, needing filling for no reason.

The plasterboard I am using explicity says decorate or skim on the light side only...

It used to be that you plastered the dark side, or used the ivory side if you weren't going to plaster. This seemed to change a few years ago. However, it doesn't make enough difference to worry about. Just tuck in the the red wine...
