Planning Permission for drainage?

Can anybody tell me if I need some sort of planning permission to drain a new patio into a surface water drain that already exists in my garden please?

I don't think it's a planning issue - but you might possibly need building regs approval if you're connecting into a public drain. If it's a private drain which serves only your property it's probably not necessary - even if it ultimately connects into a public drain. If in doubt, ask the building control people at your local council.

No you don't, that's what it's there for.

He may need it if drainage issues were part of (or conditions of) granting the original planning permision for the development. This would mainly relate to flood and environmental impact issues.

But in real terms, the impact of a patio is going to be minimal, and most people would just go ahead and do it regardless.

It would only require Bregs approval if the pipework is being altered or broken into. If its just draining from the surface into a gully, then the OP can just go ahead.

And remember that the water authority are most likely already charging for treatment of rain water throught the drains, so he may as well get his moneys worth!
