Any functional use, or is it just meant to look pretty?

It appears to be a decorative cover for a hoover.

Is she related to the Clothes Maiden we had when I was a boy?

It's not pretty to me!
Yes, or in this case a small vacuum cleaner of some kind, can't remember. The cleaner came with it but I don't need it.

Um - I'm not sure we should go into maidens you had as a boy ...

Naughty? Not me. Not never nohow.
In that case I don't think my (reluctant) handmaiden is related.
You can have her if you like!

Unless "handmaiden" is a brand name, you might just have a new definition for the Oxford English Dictionary.
Immortality of a kind....
Anyway, she looks like she could be adopted into a serviceable Aunt Sally.

================================== It looks as if the old lady had a sense of humour, pretending that the young lady was her living companion - "A maid that waits at hand; a female servant or attendant."
Just check the stuffing for jewelry, wads of banknotes, etc. and then sell it on Ebay under a new name.

Oh WHAT a good idea! Thanks, Owain.
We're going to a son's tomorrow, I know he'll like that too :-)

Indeed. It seems a strange thing to go to all the trouble to explicitly mention in a will. Did she itemise all her possessions? (Who got the second best bed?)

It occurs to me to add that when our mother died, my brother put her huge box of odd buttons for sale outside his shop. As he took it inside at closing time, he saw a glint and found two rings she'd hidden there. We'll never know if there were any more!

I should be so lucky!
It was a mong a list of things I should have. It included buckets :-)
No.
Me. Except that I didn't take it.

I came to this thread a bit late, and only just checked out Mary's tinypic link, if the young nubile in the black underwear that came up just now is available, i'll take her!
