Still not as bad as sitting at my desk on 11/9/2001 and watching the two circuits from our PoP at 25 Broadway in New York to another provider, go down. These were provided by Deutche Telekom on their two fibre rings around New York. Unfortunately both rings went through the basement at the Towers, oops.

Indeed. Couldn?t agree more with regard to car controls but only a Luddite would dismiss touch screens on smart phones. Amazingly capable devices even without a mouse, keyboard and massive monitor.

Same here - if others did not rise to the bait, I would never know they still existed!

I'm not really talking about communicating with Powergrid etc. Despite it being readily available (ie CB and PMR466), ordinary people don't generally don't possess any way of communicating between themselves (even if it's only as far as across the street). We rely totally on phones and internet - and if these fail, we have nothing.

Battery life is a concern in a rural area but my stumbling block turned out to be a reluctance to give Google access to my contacts and life!

My wife inherits last years i-phone from our youngest so we are not totally beyond hope.

That is pretty much all you can do locally by phone since these days most ordinary customers no longer have a classic wired POTS phone and when the power dies so does the base station for DECT.

I have a pair of short range walkie talkies good for a couple of miles.

Sneakernet still works even when the power is out. My first action was to check on my elderly neighbour. I can also check the other phases by going into the village hall. We have been known to lose a single phase.

I now have generating capacity since there is every possibility we will have many more power cuts given the general state of disrepair of the 50 year old electricity poles in this vicinity. I was a bit surprised the most obviously leaning at 30 degrees one survived last weeks storm.

I've still got a wired phone,; it lives in a drawer just beside my input terminal. Easily plugs in.
