Penetrating oil

My trusty decades old can of Plus Gas is almost empty. Does anyone know if the present day stuff is as good as it used to be? I was wondering if it's still the same product or if the brand name has been bought and used for an inferior replacement.

I've also seen various favourable reports of PB Blaster but not sure how impartial they are - does anyone have experience of this?

I got my last can of Plus Gas about 2 years back and it seems as good as every. Not seen or used PB blaster. A lot of the yanks on forums swear by a home brew of 50-50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Even seen you tube video of comparative tests against US branded stuff that seem convincing. hth Bob

All you need is a mixture of diesel/other solvent and oil to make your own

Is that available over here? Always seemed an Americocentric product.

I've had a tin or two of the penetrating oil from Toolstation and that (AFAICT) seems ok.

Yes, it's available from UK suppliers on Ebay but at £12.50 for an 11oz (312ml) can it's a bit more expensive than Plus Gas.

The American reviews tend to rate it better than the rest but don't seem to compare it against Plus Gas - which might not be available over there?

Well some aerosol ones have had the propellant changed to a non flammable non greenhouse non cfc alternative but I don't know about the actual formulation. Brian

Acetone? Bit dangerous that stuff. A solvent to many plastics. Brian

Some of the electrical lubricant/cleaners are quite dangerous. Used servisol a while back. it melted the headphone socket contact retainers. Brian

What's wrong with WD40?

Nearly everything. Oh yes it does not penetrate at all well.

Very useful - try to provide a little more info to make your contribution actually helpful.

Agreed, but it will often work, given a few minutes resting.

But sometimes there is no substitute for soaking under a low viscosity fluid, and Plus Gas is certainly good.

Did you mean WD-40 Multiuse or WD-40 Specialist Fast Release Penetrant or another of their products? If the former, ask yourself why they sell the latter if the basic WD-40 does the job.

(IMLE the latter is better than basic WD-40 but I've not enough experience to compare it with Plus Gas.)

Well the WD40 branded penetrating oils is actually ok

(they do a whole range of different lubricants etc under the brand now including a penetrator, silicone grease, lithium grease, PTFE dry lubricant etc)
