Painting kitchen units?

Good morning friends,

I'm wondering what is the best way to paint or otherwise refinish some kitc hen units - especially the doors. Mine are an ugly outdated colour, and I w ant to paint them white. I guess that the plastic they laminate the surface with is probably not optimal for good paint adhesion, so what is the best paint to use and what is a good way to apply it? Roller? Spray can? I'd lik e to end up with a decent 'factory finish' look - dead smooth and even.

Many thanks for any advice.

A bodyshop owner friend of mine sprayed a set for a customer. I have to say they looked fantastic,

You can get specialist primers for certain types of plastic. But knowing which plastic can be difficult.

Only way to get a factory finish would be by spraying. If you don't already have the equipment etc for this, have you costed out buying new doors?

No reason they can't be durable if done correctly. But I'd guess the costs of a decent pro spray job could be more than new doors.

My No:1 daughter painted 3 large wardrobe doors a year ago & they look fab. She is an utter perfectionist with mild OCD.

Doors were removed, rubbed down with fine grade paper and given a coat of 'difficult surface primer' from Dulux IIRC, then 2 top coats. She laid them on battens & leveled them.

Perfect finish.

A factory finish is a factory finish, but I've got good results by spending a long time preparing and getting the first coat to adhere. I rub on a *thin* coat of "liquid gloss" with a rag. Next day you can pile anything you like on top of that

Do you mean "she is an utter perfectionist", or do you mean "she has been given a diagnosis of mild Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder"? Trivializing the latter by using it as a synonym for the former is rather uncool in my book.

(And apologies if you actually meant the latter.)

No diagnosis as such, although she is medically trained. But she can't stand things not being in neat rows, or in the wrong place.

It's very easy to offend people these days, even if you don't intend to

- which I didn't.

Halfords car spray paints are also very very handy at this

True - I am easily offended by people who are easily offended.

I can't bear intolerant people.

That doesn't actually sound like OCD to me (see, for example,

Let me be clear: I didn't for a moment think you did.

We just bought new doors (and drawers). The old ones were getting a little tired, but the carcases were fine.

Yes. Often an easy way to freshen up a kitchen.

wrap , as in vinyl wrap, simpler on flatter doors. Not the fablon of old.
