Outbuildings - do modifications need planning permission, etc

I've a 20ft long brick shed that I want to split in 2, putting in a block wall, a new door and a window. Do I need permission/warrant and does the door need a reinforced lintel to carry the foot of so of brickwork above it ?

I think no to the first (after my dealings with PP) and to the second I don't know 'cause I am not a builder.

I am not sure a straight no is correct, "it depends" would probably be a more correct answer. I would give the planing dept a telephone call, describe your case, and see what they say. In my area they look for ways of doing stuff so they don't need to get more involved.

It is normal to use a wooden stud partition rather than masonry. At the least, consider using aerated concrete blocks and use a wooden lintel. You'll probably get away with using the door frame as a lintel, if you make it beefy enough, if all it has to do is support a row or two of aerated blocks. Alternatively, I may have misunderstood if you intend to put the door in an existing external wall?

You won't need PP unless the building is listed.

A lintel would help - steel or concrete.

I think that is misleading.

You should need BCO approval at the least for 'material alterations'

I am fairly sure its not planning permission, but listed building approval you need for listed.

You might ned planning for the new window, or if the outer appearance changes. Best to check.

Or wood. Frankly for internal I'd simply do substantial wooden studwork, and plasterboard it.

Or lightweight blocks and maybe a wooden lintel over e top, or if you feel paranoid, concrete.

Where the window goes in I'd use concrete - cheap enough after all.

You wont need building regs approval for a shed. Nor any PP for a window in a shed.

Its not really worth fitting timber above an external door. A concrete lintel is about a fiver.
