Not sure I understand. Isn't the 32-bit designation a function of the hardware, i.e. the CPU or whatever, and the upgrade from W7 to W10 on a 32-bit computer would install a 32-bit version of W10. Or am I missing something?

Yes, he needs a 64bit CPU, but they've existed for 18+ years and many WinXP, WinVista even Win7 windows installs were 32bit software on 64bit hardware, if the machine was running Win7 it's highly likely to be 64bit capable ...

Kind of... if you have hardware that *is* 32 bit only, then indeed you can't install a 64 bit os. If the hardware is actually 64 bit (as most has been for a long time), then you can install either.

For the technically naive.. how can you tell?

Find the model of CPU and look it up...

Or, you can use a program like CPU-Z to tell you what is in the box.

Look we all only get a fixed number of minutes on Earth. Once you've spent them you don't get any more. Wasting your precious minutes fannying about with a Core 2 Duo, never mind that just waiting for it to do anything is just criminal. Go and buy something decent.

How many minutes to earn the money? How many minutes choosing, arranging purchase and then learning how to use the new *faster* system?

Business use is now minimal so I suppose core 2 is occupying time I might otherwise spend searching for entertainment on TV.

I fully support the concept of extra life seconds and believe I have extracted all those available from preparing my breakfast of porridge and poached egg.

My interest in computer gaming ceased with.. dingbats was it?

It did exactly as you say. No bother at all.

And if anyone is interested the PC is MUCH better with 64 bit Windows, there are programs running happily that simply would not load before, Bluestacks for example.

With time this has gone full circle... In the earlier days as 64 bit platforms became available, there were quite a few compatibility problems, lack of drivers for common kit, and big name apps that would not run. That improved with time, and 32 bit compatibility in 64 bit platforms got better. Now we are approaching the other end of that, where 32 bit platforms have many of the same limitations.
