OT: Texting.

I'm a light mobile phone user - and do even less 'texting'. But sometimes it's handy. I have a Nokia N95 bought some years ago for its camera, radio and MP3 player etc capabilities, and don't want to change it. I'm on Vodaphone PAYG. And I now can't send text messages - but can receive them. I've tried a few (younger) phone whiz kids to see if they can spot the problem with no success. My SIM card in my old phone works fine text wise. Tried the Vodaphone site FAQ and help line. There doesn't seem to be a way to either check or alter the number it uses for text sending. 'Sending options' 'Message Centre in Use' just says Message Centre and can't be changed.

Try re-booting it. Can you phone out?

Against my better judgement I even re-set it to factory defaults. And yes, the phone works normally. All the bells and whistles work on it - except sending texts.

Try calling your provider, they can usually send you a settings update message which usually fixes these things.

Other things to try are.. Change the connection to GSM, rather than 3G Remove the memory card if you have one Update the firmware to the latest (reinstall it if it us already on the latest)

I don't know how, but it sounds like the SMSC setting has been erased or altered.

See

for what the SMSC does.

Looks like the number should be set to +447785016005

These may or may not be the way to create/set/modify the SMSC (from a quick google):

select Messaging > Options > Settings > Text message

Message centres=97View a list of all text message centers that have been defined.

Message centre in use=97Select which message center is used to deliver text messages.

------------------------

The option/setting above it you can use to define a new message centre, and there enter your network operator message centre number manually, if for some reason the phone is not properly picking it up from the SIM card (should be automatic). You do need to ask (or find on their web site) your operators message centre number (SMSC number, where SMSC stands for Short Message Service Center).

----------------------------

A default setting in Nokia phones often is "reply via same centre" which means if you receive a SMS your reply is sent via the SENDERS own SMS centre instead of your center!

take it to a phone shop in the high street - there are enough of them!

they may try to sell you a new contract.

I found the correct number on the Vodaphone site.

But the window in my phone just says 'Message Centre' And can't be changed to a number. Or changed at all. I've looked at the help instructions in the phone too about how to change this.

Since this is a DIY group that's rather like saying 'get a man in'.

Indeed. I trust these places even less than garages. If that's possible.

Perhaps you should try Yodaphone.

If you actually read the original post, I have.

Your 95's obviously been dumbed down to reduce vodafone's need to train support staff...

google "n95 vodafone debrand", do that, and then you should get

messaging/options/settings/text message/message centres/options...

If 'Yodaphone' is meant to mean something to me, it doesn't. I'm not a phone nerd.

Dunno. I bought it off Ebay new at a good price and I knew it was 'tied' to Vodaphone. The supplier I was using anyway.

the out box, it's only a couple of months since mine worked.

message centre/options/change doesn't allow you to change anything.

I'm a bit wary about installing any old software, though. But I've discovered I'm not running the latest software anyway so will try updating that first.
