Any reason not to use a handheld steam cleaner for the washing up? Plates, saucepans, metal cutlery etc.
I've posted before that we have an issue with getting hot water to our kitchen (20m+ from combi). This seems a versatile solution.
Thoughts?

You are likely to burn yourself.
It may take 10 minutes per plate especially if food has been left to dry. When the adverts show these things working it's on dirt that has been lightly applied 30 seconds beforehand.
What you may miss in the adverts is sterilisation doesn't occur with just wafting the steam over the surface. The small print at the bottom of TV adverts says when steamed for 30 seconds.
If steam was the answer dishwasher wouldn't use water :)
An undersink water heater would solve the problem.
Based on the Polti(?) my mum discarded in my direction, the main reason would be a pathetic flow of steam from a tiny nozzle ...
A low-tech approach is to add water from an electric kettle to get your desired washing-up water temperature.
