I was looking to buy a tenor banjo, but most models in stores tend to be cheap and nasty China-made junk. This is not the USA, so there's not much of a surplus market for this kind of instruments. Good models tend to sell for a fortune, never mind the lucky owners of a 1930s Vega!
I am tempted to buy one at auctions in Germany. There seems to be a market there, but then you need to add travel costs, VAT, taxes, etc.
Is there such a thing as auctions for musical instruments at reasonably affordable (less than £1k) price over here?
I am also tempted to make one from scratch. In the USA you can buy kits. I think Stewmac sells one, but God forbid shipping costs and taxes.
