OT: Good medical advice forum?

I've tried diagnosing my friend myself but failing miserably. ;-)

She got an odd collection of symptoms (mostly cardiac) but they have her cardiologist stumped. Are there any good forums that anyone can recommend for a bit of a brainstorming session with real doctors?

I've had a quick look at med-help but they want $20 to put a question before the doctors there. Not averse to spending a bit of money but of course I've no way of knowing whether it isn't all just a bit of a scam.

I don't that the web is the place to get a complex issue diagnosed. Just look at what happens here in D-I-Y!!

Your cardiologist should not object to asking for a second opinion and to refer you to a colleague - try for one in a teaching hospital with heart specialisms.

My wife had a problem that was little know/understood at the time and it took several years to find a consultant who picked up on a few of the symptoms and then ran tests to prove his theory. This was some 25 years ago and once her problem was classified, she has received superb case under the NHS without calling in the specialists. They just needed a steer in the right direction.

Good Luck

Well it may well come to that but the symptoms really are out of the ordinary and it's not entirely clear whether a cardiologist is what is needed. That's why I think a bit of a brain storming session might help.

Thanks

The only brainstorming session that may help needs to involve the medical team responsible for the patient, and possibly people involved in related disciplines at a local major or teaching hospital. If you can get referred to a consultant at a teaching hospital, that's about as good care as you can get anywhere in the world. (You *are* in the UK, aren't you?)

Web services are next to useless, and can cause more problems than they solve, as a major part of any diagnosis and treatment for anything more complicated than a cold involves having unfettered access to the patient. All anyone on the end of an internet or web link can do is what we can all do. Ask questions, build a list of answers, and search for those symptoms in a reference book. Then come to the same wrong conclusion as the rest of us.

Whilst echoing Bob's concern about not taking uncorroborated Usenet advice too seriously, as you have decided in principle to post the symptoms in another forum, why not post them here?

I'm sure we are all curious, and someone may know of a case with a similar history.

Not qualified medics, but there are quite a lot of fora here:

You might well find one or more relevant to the condition.

Sadly, whilst some people get incredible care and treatment for all sorts of things, others do not. All too often the establishment seems almost set up to avoid handling certain issues. One I know a little about is Pernicious Anaemia. Despite treatment often being extraordinarily simple (regular hydroxocobalamin injections), all too many people do not get that. For example, someone being started and then refused any more "because their B12 level had risen to be in the reference range".

If you are going to spend money, best do it on real doctors in the real world, as tests on the actual person are going to be required. Brian
