OT: Current 'best' mailhost please?

Yes they do ...

They sell 'let's sell this working address on to someone they can't preemptively blacklist' ... and so it goes on ...

Yes, you might blacklist *them*, but not the 100 other spammers they pass your address onto.

Yes, that *one* might, the 100's of other extra ones won't.

It doesn't work that way (and I'm surprised you don't know).

Cheers, T i m

Why would I want GPS to tell me where I am when I am ehere I am and I know where it is?

as for Itunes...well its apple so it must be s*it.

But of copurse I COULD run it.

Why not?

What have you done to stop them?

It does work that way. But I am not surprised you dont know that.

I wonder if that was a historic thing as they seem to be suffering a small downturn in customer numbers?

There seem to be some comments out on the interweb re a merger with / takeover of another hosting Co (Daily Internet) recently who might be spoiling their reputation a bit?

"Now part of the GoDaddy Group of companies that include GoDaddy, Media Temple, Host Europe, 123-reg, Heart Internet, domainFACTORY, Domain Monster, RedCoruna, Domainbox, Donhost, Brand Fortress, PlusServer, Server4You, and the Paragon Internet Group which uses the brand names TsoHost, WebFusion, daily internet, EVO, MrSite, Dataflame, and Vidahost!"

It's just the same as washing machine brands! ;-)

Not the point is it mate. Linux is ok as a nearly ran OS for the desktop (it's great for servers, my TV and routers or as a platform for Android, basically anything where 'ordinary people' don't have to interface with it) and if all those men in sheds started talking together and did some real parallel processing rather than forking Linux all over the place, maybe the software houses and hardware manufacturers could have something they could all hang their hats on?

But it's like they are still trying to refine Betamax, VHS, Audio Cassette and 8-Track when the rest of the world is streaming HD ... ;-(

Great fun for the geek's and retro boys of course ... ;-)

Not according to billions of happy iDevice users who wouldn't have a functional solution otherwise?

Aww bless ... yes, try a bodge it together under WINE or run a Windows VM to run it on ... yeah, so much easier than just clicking on setup.exe (not).

Nope, I run a few Linux boxes and do so as servers ... I also have many machines that will dual boot into Linux bit the only time that happens is if I want to try something for S&G's, just to see if it's caught up yet.

And of course it hasn't ...

formatting link

... and doesn't look like it's going to any time soon. ;-(

So, now we can cue the Linux geek response ... "Well, we don't want to share it with anyone else anyway ... ner ner ne ner ner ...". ;-)

p.s. Q. How come a discontinued and 15 year old OS can still do more for me than the latest and greatest Linux distro can? Answer, it's still very much a Windows centric world.

How have you prevented it opening remote images? Or do you never look at the spam box (a bit hard if you want to check that no wanted mails got put there) or do you not have a preview area where the selected mail shows?

Because you haven't signposted your address as being valid so AFATAC it's just a mad up or dead address. You replying creates a real positive. Not replying says nothing at all.

Oh dear ... Do you have good days and bad days as this id definitely one of your bad days mate. ;-(

Cummon, you can do better than that.

Cheers, T i m

p.s. A trick the crims use to help you understand what you are doing.

Park outside someone's house at night and sound the horn a few times. If the curtains open you know someone is in. If they don't you don't know if they are in or not. There is nothing stopping them taking a chance no one is in of course but that's waaaay different to knowing there is.

Oh dear.

You really are having a bad day.

I am not *replying*

I am *rejecting*.

*No* reject implies the email address is *valid*.

A reject implies the email address is invalid.

Remember I run my own email server...

But you are not an email guru, so I suppose you got confused.

Bingo, that and TB prompts me to open remote images etc.

Cheers, T i m

Yes dear,

They say 'imitation is the sincerest form of flattery' so thanks!

Yes you are.

By replying to them. "I keep a register of domains that send it - or purported domains that send it - and reject them all with a blacklist message."

Make your mind up.

But confirms that something is there to reject it.

Just as well, considering.

That's true, these days, but years ago I was talking directly to Microsoft's 3rd line support (and they wrote and sent me a patch) when first setting up MS Mail to SMTP gateway when creating the Company / International email system. Luckily that only had ccMail, X.25 and Fax gateways, along with the other dial-in clients (customers, suppliers and remote staff). Because of all that they thought I'd be a good candidate for a Lotus Notes trainer but the 'Apps Dev' side really wasn't my thing. The System Admin side (mail servers and connectors etc) was right up my street though.

It's not unknown.

Cheers, T i m

Nice weasel words there mate. ;-(

Liar.

There you go! See how much nicer it feels when you tell the truth. ;-)

Good for you. However, you are very much the 'odd man out'.

And I'm glad you paid extra for the privilege. ;-)

Of course that must be how it is .... that's how people 'like you' are able to deal with such things.

However, while you were buying PC's I was (and always have) been building them (starting with my first PC XT) and long before there was even a hint of Linux ... (MS-DOS, 1981. Windows 1, 1985. Linux 0.01,

1991).

Not that it existing seems to have made much difference to it's penetration on the user desktop!

But it's good you have a hobby, especially at your age. ;-)

Cheers, T i m

Who says I ever bought a PC with Windows installed in it? It is quite possible to do otherwise, maybe takes a bit of effort but perfectly possible.

You? No one that I know of Chris?

Of course.

Quite.

Of course ... I've been doing so for nearly 40 years. ;-)

So, what generally happens ITRW and especially with the vast majority who just walk into a PC store and say 'I wont that won' is they get a PC with Windows. I did have to find a Windows PC for someone who walked into a PC Store, bought an iMac because 'it looked nice' but didn't realise just how different it was (from Windows and much hardware). They weren't able to book a flight via any browser on OSX so they wanted something that would.

And even the Linux geeks will buy a windows machine and install Linux alongside it (whilst dissing Microsoft and Windows while they are doing so of course) and they do it because even they admit there are those things that more often or not are only possible via Windows (like updating their phone firmware, their GPS firmware and software or the PC BIOS etc).

Only sensible people don't burn their bridges. ;-)

Cheers, T i m

Well I did leave win10 on the lappy but never having used if for 18 months, when I ripped the disk out to istall an SSD, I am afraid win 10 got ripped out with it.

I have no working MS OS anwyhere except on a WINXP VM that runs just three programs. All to do with CAD.

All my computers are built from parts, though I dont do the building myself these days. I have a local company do taht for me, and indeed most of them are ex-winXP specials cobbled together from scrap and given a whole new lease of life with Linux.

If they need extra disk or more pereformance I upgrade them - my server has 3TB of disk on it these days..and I did put a new motherboard in this desktop as the old one died and I need a bit more CPU for video processing.

I have no use for or need of windows beyond allowing those applications to operate, and I seldom use them. Once a month at most.

But then I write and code and read. I dont play with computers with I tunes and I dont do mobile computing since the best reason to leave te house is to not use a computer.

You remind me of a mate (now decesased) who said 'Linux wont be able to read the raw files of my Canon - it needs a PC or a MAC to run the software they provide.

30 seconds later having dowloaded the right plugin, the gimp was displaying his pictures...

There is a lot Linux doesnt do, of course. It doesn't catch viruses, and it won't currently play DOOM, but there is a heck of a lot it does do a whole lot better than Windoes.

Like update itself without rebooting.

*shrug* you are so defensive about windows, presumablyt because tou have onvetsted a lot of time and effeort into becoming quasi-competent at configuring it.

Well I did once as well. I abanded around 2005 and have never looked back.

Windows is the *only* mainstream OS on *any* platform that is not based on some unix like derivative. MAC OSX is based on BSD, Android is based on Linux. I would IOS is based a unix like OS - Darwin.

Linuxs is the standard OS for all minicomputers mainfarmes and supercomputers. IBM mainframes run Linux. Windows server is ponly deployed in VMs where legacy applitaions that need it are coupled to legacy windows desktops.

Ther are signs that Microsft is moving towards linux itself as more and more applications are ported to it serverside, and I woulkd not be surprised if in a few years Microsfyt bit te bullet, and produced a linux kit that allowed windows applications to run native on linux, and indeed windows became another linux distro...

Thse dayts there ois little value in operating systems, and I suspect its applicatins that will allow Microsft to survive.

Lets face it, the desktop PC is not selling into the general market anymore. Its all tablets and fondleslabs and smart phones and smart TVs.

And Microsoft is nowhere in that market. *nix runs it.

Nice to know it's still there on the old disk if you should actually need to do something other than use your laptop as a typewriter. ;-)

Yup, so you have (and rely on) having access to Windows (VM or on raw iron). And had you wanted iTunes or had a Garmin or TomTom GPS you needed to update or a myriad of other hardware not supported (fully or otherwise) by Linux (or OSX in some cases) then you will have to use it again (or go without those things etc).

LOL, most *things* are built from parts mate. ;-)

So you are buying a commodity, just like 'most people' then.

Yup, that is a good example of where Linux can have a use. Till it doesn't work in the 128M of RAM XP was happily running in or doesn't support the older hardware then you will be called names for trying.

LOL ... 'no need for Windows' ... apart from those things I regularly have to use Windows for!

Mate, it should be like the greedy FIT bandits ... you want to push the whole eco BS then you stand on yer own two feet and go off grid. Same with Linux geeks dissing Windows and yet still *having* to use it or worse, earning a living off it (biting the hand that feeds them).

Yup, like I said then, you 'only' use your desktop computer as a typewriter when pretty well any OS can do that. It would be if you had to use Linux as I do you would really see just how limited it is (Car diagnostics and much other hardware support issues).

Quite. ;-)

Ok?

Then he wasn't like me then was he? See, unlike your mate I'd give it a try first, and if it failed when it should be automagic I then search the WEB, when that fails I might ask on a forum or try a different distro or 1,000,000 other time wasting steps before I say it won't work (for me).

It's spelled Windows, just like I spell Linux, 'Linux', not Linsux or Linblows.

Just like Windows can be set to do you mean? And unlike Windows, you can't set Linux to automatically update that means every Linux machine I've installed for someone has *never* been updated (till I do it).

No, I use Windows because it does more for me and does so easier than say Linux or OSX? Simples. But then I actually do things with my PC's that you don't so how would you ever know that?

Because all you need is a server (Linux is a good fit there) and a typewriter. Now, if you wanted to run say VauxCom or Forscan (free OBD tools) you would be fuked.

I know but did you have a point there?

No, it runs on a Linux kernel. The UI isn't *not* based on Linux or any Linux DE (AFAIK).

Sorry, do you have a point yet with this? Windows isn't Linux ... yes, I know?

Why are you advocating *nix when I'm not advocating Windows?

That would be cool.

Tell that to my mate in the PC show who can't build / refub them fast enough!

And laptops ...

But still doing *nothing* in desktops (that run 99% of the business desktop market), games machines or laptops.

The Mrs and I still use PC's every day because we are mostly in one place, whereas the daughter is mostly on her smartphone and if she needs to do something serious (like updating her website (Serif Web plus) DTP (Serif Page Plus), or Internet banking) she uses her W7 laptop.

Her laptop is backed up automatically (when it's on, raw iron recovery) along with all the other PC's daily by my Windows Home Server. I did try to use Linux for it but after wasting way too many hours getting nowhere, I stuck 50 quids worth of Microsoft product, clicked 'setup' and was away within a couple of hours. That was

I dont. I do a heck of alot more than that.,

Oh heres a bit of good news for you
