It was more about the total elevation of utter stupidity to be admirable.

"That's not fact, that's your opinion" "My opinion is just as valid as yours" "If people with letters after their name all say it on the BBC or in the Guardian, it must be true"... We have always had stupid people, but we didn't use to put them in government, just the Royal Family.

Probably plenty of both, but I suspect the protest element is pretty large, plus a foolish attraction towards anyone who offers them simple quick solutions to problems which really don't have simple quick solutions in a civilised world.

It works when demonstrated to (e.g.) the local authority, in ideal circumstances, by a glib demonstrator who can finesse all those tricky "What does this mean?" moments.

One scam is to put QR code sticker on the machine and have the instruction "scan the QR code for payment".

Which all begs the question of whether if someone did come along with a solution, would anyone believe them?

My experience is that politicians simply do not know, and good ideas are not something they have time for.

Ultimately a growing nucleus of people who do know and better still have money to spend is what changes things, and the politicians all jump behind it as soon as it looks like a winner.
