Options for bathroom wall

I've just finished an internal extension to a bathroom by shifting a studwall. I've finished the wall on the bathroom side with waterproof 10mm tilebacking board. Very easy to work with, and all set, ready for tiling.However, I've had a tiling rethink, and no longer want to tile to the ceiling.This would leave the tile backing board, which will need finishing with asmooth surface. I don't want to go to the bother of a plasterer.What would be a suitable material to use? Something thinner than the tiles -say less than 10mm.Or is it going to the best/easiest to cut away the non-tiled sections and usesome water resistant plasterboard? This would involve wasting some of the tilebacking board, but hey.

Do they still make sheet Formica ??.

I thought the modern way to line bathrooms was using this stuff laminated onto HDF (*not* MDF) backing ?. You still need to seal the edges though.

I think that might look good in this (Edwardian) house.

Thanks. The uneven ceiling is an issue - slopes down from the external wall. Also, the room I built into is a couple inches lower. So it might be a new overboarded ceiling when and if I get my head around it.

If you have an external corner or exposed edge of the tile use plastic or metal edge trim (probably plastic in a bathroom). It comes in variants for different thicknesses of tile and in different lengths. Some sheds or tile shops may only stock shorter lengths of 2 and 2.4m but I found some 3m lengths for one floor to ceiling corner. If tiling around a window this type of trim protects the edge of the tile.

Many/most tiles don't have glaze on the edge so, for instance, if you don't tile to the ceiling the top edge of the tile is exposed and could be semi porous. Fitting trim to the top and grouting may give a better waterproof seal. Alternatively seal the top of the tiles with a bead of silicone sealant. In some places in my house I've painted the exposed edge of the tile to disguise the area without glaze and is a different colour.
