Table salt shaker cap with dispenser holes partly plugged with crusted salt and? Domestic staff steeped it in soapy water which has left a greenish/white residue.



The dispenser looks to be plated copper so.. copper oxide?



Not a serious issue but any suitable solvent found in a domestic kitchen?

Try vinegar. It's likely to be a carbonate - probably nickel rather than copper. Nickel carbonate is a lighter green than copper carbonate. Nickel is used as a corrosion-resistant coating for mild steel, but the latter requires an intermediate copper coating as the nickel won't adhere well to the steel.

The problem is that the nickel was probably once covered with a thin layer of varnish, and that has now worn off so it will continue to be attacked. You could try recoating it with a thinned-down varnish. If you use neat varnish, it will probably be thick enough to at least partially block the dispenser holes.

Indeed. However this the domed top from a small glass screw top container. I don't know how a domed top with a coarse thread in very thin metal would be manufactured but I suspect a more malleable material than steel might be a good choice:-)

The technique is known as 'spinning'

Hmm. No central hole in my cellar top for locating on the mandrel and.. forming the thread?

It doesn't need a spindle Yoo form a cup with a pressing, slip that over a bottle and roll the thread into the glass grooves

I also wondered about that, but nickel is also ferromagnetic, so you'd never be certain whether it was steel or nickel.
