old caravan

A caravan has been abandoned, found, towed to a shed and I need to dispose of it. Police have checked it as not stolen. It isn't all that old but the inside is a bit stripped out, it isn't habitable atm. Is an old caravan generally saleable? for the chassis or for storage or as a transport/trailer. ISTR they once were.

Trailers need to be type approved if built after a certain date. I?m not sure if it applies to adaptions / conversions- such as using an old chassis.

Depending just how old it is, it may be of interest if it falls into the specialist ?vintage? group. I?m not sure which do, just that some are considered vintage. There must be info on the internet.

Not what you would call vintage. On the side it says Solar524.

It may be worth registering and making its availability known on locostbuilders, rhocar, pistonheads or the like. Caravan chassis can make a good basis for a kit-car transporter trailer.

If things are simply bolted to the chassis or non-structural parts removed, there should be no problem.

For comparison, there is no need to IVA a car that is heavily modified, as long as the chassis (or structural parts of the shell for a monocoque construction) are not altered. You can strip a Beetle down to the floor and as long as it retains 8 points (from 2 for original suspension, 2 for original steering, 2 for original chassis, 2 for original axles, 2 for original transmission, 1 for original engine), stick a different body on (such as a beach buggy) and there is no need to IVA it.

My caravan rolled in a recent storm. I put it on a facebook selling page for free. I had a taker within 20 minutes. 2 in 30.

I have just looked at your photo. Yours is in better condition than mine before it rolled.

Looks OK. I searched ebay for sold listings for 'caravan project' and a few came up, selling for a few hundred pounds.

Worth trying if it's on a 'as seen/buyer collects' basis?

Is there a DVLA style database for caravans, or is possession 10/10ths of the law?

I advertised one for a tenner and a bloke bought it to make a gang hut for his kids.

List it on Gumtree. I sold an old tin shed for a tenner, and paving slabs, bits of worktop, all sorts. Doubt you'd have any problem getting rid of a stripped out caravan.

Since the Old Bill seem to have claimed it with their tape, tell them to tow it away ?

Do caravans have ID plates like cars do ?.

If weatherproof it will have some value as a field or site shelter. Mike

My guess is that it's early 1990's - in which case it's very unlikely to have a viable chassis if you remove the body. The chassis would be minimal - just enough to support the suspension and draw-bar, and the whole thing would rely on body stiffness for structural integrity. It would take a *lot* of work to construct (say) a car transporter.

Look at the last few seconds of this video:
