No hot water in mixer shower

Hot water in my mixer shower packed in.

Called a plumber out, plumber said it's a DIY mixer shower, buy a new one for £80 and you can fit it yourself.

Told plumber I'd rather he fitted it, even if it was DIY

Went to B&Q, similar replacement shower (Showerforce) was actually £150. Bought it on the spot because Plumber was at the house clocking up time.

Plumber fitted the shower, still no hot water.

Plumber then unplugs the hose from the hot water tube on the power shower pump at the other end to find a pieces of plastic/rubber had broken off/disintegrated inside the pump and was clogging the hot water tube. Removes all the bits.

Plumber dissembles the pump to check for other pieces of plastic blocking it up inside, nothing can be found.

Put it back together again and the hot water was working fine.

Now... plumber tries to reassure me by saying how bad condition the old shower was and how the other small pieces of rubber could well be blocking up the original, now removed shower.

Question is, was the plumber right in making me go out and buy a new shower or should he have checked for a blockage on the pump end first?

To his credit, he did check the pipes leading into and out of the pump and both were hot, and even I thought that something had gone wrong on the shower end.

At the moment I'm not sure whether to be happy or not with his works, and whether he should have checked the pump first and whether the original shower really did get blocked with plastic bits or whether it's likely the plastic bits were just at the pump end.

The whole experience cost me £150 parts and £120 in labour (total £270) . It's over to you.

My experience has always been, do it yourself or get yourself screwed on a regular basis. Not that the regular bit applied in my case - I learnt fast!

Get people in if you're not adept but do it by recommendation preferably by someone you both know well.
