Neighbour's steps

NZ has huge plantations of Radiata pine. It soaks up timber treatments very well. Native trees grow slowly and are seldom cut down now. Douglas Fir is good timber too but can't be treated easily so is just used for framing.

My neighbour is now putting plastic under his steps to stop the rot. That won't work of course. He's putting huge pegs through the plastic. Water will sit there and rot the timber faster. Should I tell him where to buy proper timber like mine?

I have spoken to him and he is using H4 timber that is suitable in the ground for at least 30 years. He's going to put H3 treated Radiata Grip treads on, and it's going to look great.

I see cause / effect isn't his strong suit.
