Can't you make him ride on top of the ladders ?. That way he will take great care to secure them properly.
I blame poor parenting, social services cuts due to the Tories, schools affected by Tory Cutz, the internet, poor nutrition thanks to the evil food multinationals, Bexit, and Global Warming. The boy himself is blameless.

No, the apprentice had clamped the ladders to each other, instead of clamping the ladders to the roof rack.
At least with ladders you apply force to see if they are attached to the roof bars!
