I bought a so called British made fan some years ago, in about a year the bearings were so worn the motor seized up, The o called oilite bearings were not, they were some kind of metal, but they wore very quickly. Brian

I get the impression the AC motors used in a lot of fans aren't the best.

Humidity has just gone up in the last three hours for some reason, possibly from someone that has been cooking.

My fan isn't coping as well now :(

You need to run it tonight, then shut everything tight tomorrow (Monday) to keep the heat out.

You use conditional logic, to control a whole house fan.

If the outdoors is "swamp gas" and is at 95% humidity, that's a time to shut off the fan. As you do not want that stuffy air inside the house.

This is why fans are not a panacea - they can only be profitably run with certain weather conditions, and when it is hotter than hell outside, the odds of the conditions being met for fan operation are zero.

I rely on a humidity meter to measure house humidity, and look at the weather charts for an indication of outside conditions, making some correction for the temperature difference.

Where I live, there is a magical time in the spring, where the external air is 20% humidity. It only lasts for three or four days. And you can "pump like crazy" when those days arrive, and dry all the carpets out. A two hour run with the whole house fan, makes a huge difference. But for most of the rest of the year, the odds of 20% showing up again, are quite low.

You can swirl the air around inside the house, and that's a whole different calculus. If the house humidity is high, not a lot of "comfort" results, as there is little evaporative cooling off your skin.

One of the reasons air conditioners are prized, is for their dehumidification effect. The next factor is temperature. But humidity comes first. In comparison, a dehumidifier unit, is a loser, because it does reduce the humidity, but it has a lot of waste heat it is pumping into the room, and that makes it a loser on the second factor of temperature. Air conditioners work best, if the waste heat is going outside (portable units with hoses, you'd want a two-hose unit if someone would sell you one -- the one hose roller-units are not as good -- sadly, one hose units severely outnumber two hose units).
