Mower suggestions

I need to buy a mower for my daughter as I am fed up with taking my Flymo as I end up getting mulchy stuff in my car and by the time I go the grass is too long for it to cope without holding it up like a scythe!

I am thinking electric and with wheels (Petrol is a little more than I want to pay and I don't think she will care for it adequately).

Any suggestions? ( I have the usual sheds nearby). Is it a case of the highest wattage for the price?

If you're thinking of a rotary mower, my main comment would be to buy one with an induction motor (unless you specifically want a cheap throw-a-way mower).

Last time I bought a mower, nearly 10 years ago, that ruled out most flymos and mowers in the sheds. Mower centres did lots of them though, knowing them to be much better than the universal motor mowers. I've bought two different ones over the years. They're both different German makes, which are not well known over here, and both still working fine. The older one is probably nearly 20 years old now. (It may well be that the mower scene has changed since I was last in the market.)

For a given cutting width, you may find an induction moter mower has a lower power rating, but this is because it's more efficient (more of the power goes into cutting the grass and less into heating up the motor). However, the main advantage of an induction motor mower is that it's torque profile is exactly what you want for cutting grass (max torque at almost full speed), whereas cheaper universal motors have a torque profile which is completely wrong for cutting grass (max torque when stationary, and lowest torque at full speed, so they slow significantly under load). Also, induction motors don't have any brushes to wear out (although I needed a new capacitor after about 15 years).

She sounds like a candidate for a small hover, but with a metal blade rather than the easy-shatter plastic type. Wheels tend to flatten long grass rather than cut it

SWMBO bought a Power Devil mower & strimmer from 'Arghhh-os' about 10 years ago for about £40 the pair. I berated her at the time, for buying cheap rubbish. Turned out to be the best mower we've ever had, still going strong. Induction motor. Strimmer wasn't bad either.

You didn't say how big the lawn is. If it's small (say up to 150m2?) I would highly recommend what we've got: a simple push mower:

(we got ours cheaper than that at B&Q -- who now don't seem to sell 'em) Our 38cm is the second we've had; first one lasted about 10 years (still have it and use it ocasionally)

It's extremely light, small, sharp, and fun to use (honest). In fact my wife loves using it as much as I do.

OTOH: ours works very well partly because we take care of it: give it a brush down after cutting, and never force it to try and cut twigs, stones etc. Your daughter might not be inclined to do that.

Power-Trak 3400 Electric Rotary Lawn Mower. 730/3047 Save Over £13.00 £49.99 was £63.59

Clearance price, v good machine, I have an earlier model and a relative got this one on my recommendation, both very happy with them.

I think Qualcast and Bosch are linked, they certainly claim to have a Bosch motor in this one. IME the lighter Qualcast models (below this one) aren't as good.
