umm,. possibly.. yes, I think the power is v cubed. the actual mass per unit time is prop. to v and the energy is as mv squared, so power is as v cubed.

BUT that's with an infinitely variable prop pitch: for a fixed pitch its all a bit different - there is a lot of efficiency loss, off design windspeed.

so that might mean that torque actually should vary as v squared? yes..that works when I think about it. twice as many molecules hitting twice as fast..

I thought that your fine leader wants to cover every square inch of the Highlands in wind turbines! Or maybe that's only big companies who pay lots of bri^H^H^H taxes.

Either way, there's your tourist industry down the pan :-(

Most of Scotland doesn't have a tourist "industry". Basically it's Edinburgh and, on a much much smaller scale, a few places in the highlands and islands, but even in a lot of the latter it hardly exists and is dwarfed by juicy grants, often stamped with the word "enterprise", which are filed under "tourism".

Ah, the East coast. Never been there much. But we have spent holidays on the West Coast and Hebrides for 30 years, off and on. I used to have a list of islands visited, here somewhere. You'd be surprised how busy some places are - Colonsay on Wednesdays (when you can do a day trip from Oban), Gigha before the last ferry of the day leaves, Jura (especially in the bar of the Jura Hotel). We once arrived at Keills Jetty (looks out over the Sound of Jura from the North end of the Kintyre Peninsula to find a party of Germans already there... Grrrr.

Perhaps you're right - that's why we go there. :o)

Will your neighbours (if you have any) really not mind? If my neighbour pu= t up a 4.1m total height structure in their garden making noise whenever th= e wind blow (which is presumably a lot of the time or you wouldn't be bothe= ring to do it) I'd be pretty unhappy.

Hmm. I agree with you about Alness - but a number of the other places you mention do have noticeable tourism. It's seasonal, though.

orkney is fabulous - best neolithic constructions anywhere in Europe!

And lots of sea birds too. Definitely a tourist destination.

Very much a tourist destination! I loved it there - must get back some day.

hey! see you there. we had TWO DAYS OF SUNSHINE when I was there, apparently the only two days of sunshine in living memory.
