Mono Block tap and Flexible pipes

I have just taken delivery of a cloakroom washbasin. The tap has two flexible braided hoses to the tap. They have a couple of "O" Rings that go into a recess in the tap body. It is difficult to tighten the hoses using any tool - do the "O" rings typically work well and give a good seal? I am guessing that tightening isn't too important as the seal is on the outer diameter.

Is that with the tap fitted to the basin or not? Will the hoses and tap base fit through the basin hole as a single unit and the fixing bits over the fitted hoses? If so fit hose before fitting tap to basin.

Have done as a dry run on the dining table!

I don't think the body can be removed but will check

Sometimes the hexagons on the flexibles are staggered which makes it easy to tighten them, sometimes not. A drop of liquid PTFE and a tighten up with pliers will sort it. The O rings will seal.

The hole in the sink invariably won't accept both flexibles at the same time, either put one through first, then t'other, or install one & connect the other before putting the tap on final position.

IME, monoblocks are a PITA in a washbasin unless you want brain damage when you bend forward.

DO NOT, use liquid PTFE on O rings.

A tool isn't needed. Just hand tight plus a bit. Fit the hoses to the tap first then drop the lot through the hole in the sink.

Yes.

Oh, I like monoblocs. Too late to avoid the brain damage. But some people have very odd ideas about what size of tap is proportionate to the size of the basin.

I've seen small cloakroom basins with normal-size taps fitted. Looks very odd and is useless.

Thanks Mike. Done - It looks good on the dining room table.

A for brain damage - There ain't room to bend down to wash face - strictly hand wash.

Maybe you could re-write that into English? Special tools for flexi tap connectors - what are they then? You dont need the O rings? - please explain in detail how they'll seal without.

Alan.

A.Lee - The pipes seal due to the seals being on their outside diameter and then they screw into a counterbore - hence the thread and the face have little bearing on the seal (I am hoping). There are 2 "O" rings on each pipe - it looks encouraging.

On a few ocassions, I've bought two of these staggered kits, and used just the longer nuts. It makes them easier to access, the holes are usually slightly splayed so they don't interfere with each other, and it enables a pop-up waste rod to pass through.

Never needed to add anything, and none have leaked.

You can use a two hole basin and have the monblock to one side in one hole and then a blanking hole in the other. Works a treat. You can bend forwards and rinse your face and no brain damage.

Ah! So you use a single hole basin then.
