retrieve contact numbers from old sim if poss get free replacement sim for your network go to their website to register it, you'll need the microscopic number on the sim Once they activate it you have your old number & sometimes old contacts already.
Thanks for this. It really ought to be as easy as that, oughtn't it? But I have spent the six days since I posted this enquiry going round and round in circles and getting nowhere.
Voda shop says I have to register the old sim in my name first. On line it refuses to register it because.. ...I'm not registered with them. Robo chat eventually transfers me to real person (I think.. ...how can you tell these days?) who gives me a web link to register.

If I went to a non-affiliated phone service shop, could they clone the information on my original SIM and make a working replacement of the right size and voltage or if I go that way am I heading towards a world of criminality?

Thanks for all the answers, so far. Any new suggestions gratefully received. I'm buggering off to a non-2G/GSM country tomorrow so quick fixes are especially welcome. It's either that or be without 2FA and hope that I don't need it. At least I have my laptop so uk.d-i-y probably won't get rid of me just yet.

Nick's is an old phone, so it *might* use the tiny number of memory slots on the SIM, most phones haven't done that for a decade or more, they keep them in flash memory (usually a SQL database synced with the cloud).
